Session Details
Engage. Discuss. Solve.
The EnergyBiz Leadership Forum isn't just about listening to thought leaders and policy makers; it's also about engaging them in new and unique ways.
The format, based on an interactive sharing of thoughts between participants and speakers, will serve as a springboard for the development of a sound, cohesive national energy policy.
The event is highlighted by five notable keynote speakers, currently leading the charge for energy innovation and independence.
- T.
Boone Pickens, Founder and Chairman, BP Capital Management
- Charles
E. Phillips Jr., President, Oracle Corporation
- Dan Reicher, Director
of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives, Google.org
- James Rogers,
Chairman, President and CEO, Duke Energy
- LeRoy Nosbaum, CEO and Chairman of the Board, Itron
- Sven Thesen, Utility Operations & Sustainability Strategy, Better Place
Additionally, each session consists of two types of specific formats.
- Presentations: Each session contains 10-15 minute presentations given by subject matter experts chosen for their specific topical perspective.
- Roundtable Panels: After the presentations are concluded, the speakers involved in that session will join together with representatives from the energy industry vendor community for a free-flowing, one-hour panel discussion about the overarching session topic.
As part of that roundtable discussion, audience members will be asked to participate in a Q&A portion.

SESSION One – Setting the Stage
It is a perfect storm. Energy demand is poised to climb steeply once the economy rebounds. Industry executives worry about whether there will be enough power to keep the lights on. Meanwhile, the government is getting ready to embrace the most sweeping environmental regulations ever as it zeroes in on global warming. Will consumers and business be whipsawed as these grand themes play out? Who will protect them, and how will they do so? What policies are being considered at the state and federal level to bring on a new energy economy?

SESSION Two – Resource Review
Coal has been the energy workhorse of the American economy – but it is now challenged by environmentalists at every turn. Nuclear energy is increasingly seen as a clean power option, but no new nuclear plants have been ordered in three decades. The price tag of new plants being planned is sky high. Many states have rushed to embrace renewables, but no one knows if and when a new smart grid will be in place to link our rural renewable assets to our power hungry cities. Before we march forward, we must consider the energy resources that we have and how to best bring them to market.

SESSION THREE – The Role of Technology
Technology is the key. It has driven down the cost of wind and many believe it will quickly bring down the cost of solar. It will solve our nuclear waste storage issue and bottle up CO2 below our feet. But the power industry does not have a record of backing basic research, and federal government support for energy R&D swings wildly over the years. Will our energy future be defined by new players? What can technology achieve – and how can those achievements be best realized?

SESSION FOUR – The Power Renaissance
You feel it where ever utility industry leaders now gather. Complex problems are dead ahead, but never has the industry been so ready to define a new future and embrace change. Will they be replacing oil companies as the main providers of energy for transportation in America? Will they empower consumers like never before to intelligently govern their energy appetites? Here is what is happening at ground zero.

SESSION FIVE – A Blueprint for Action:
Policy Recommendations for Action
The need is urgent. The United States has needed a clear energy policy ever since the 1970s. Promises have been made – about energy independence – for example, and never kept. Now is the time, with a new administration in place, to enact the laws and incentives that will shape the all important power industry for the first quarter of the century and beyond. What four or five actions must be taken immediately to address the most pressing needs of the power sector? What harder, longer-term solutions must now be defined?
