EnergyBiz Leadership Forum Wrap-Up

Day 1: SESSION TWO

Coal has been the energy workhorse of the American economy – but it is now challenged by environmentalists at every turn. Nuclear energy is increasingly seen as a clean power option, but no new nuclear plants have been ordered in three decades. The price tag of new plants being planned is sky high. Many states have rushed to embrace renewables, but no one knows if and when a new smart grid will be in place to link our rural renewable assets to our power hungry cities. Before we march forward, we must consider the energy resources that we have and how to best bring them to market.

Building Energy Certainty: A Nuclear New Deal
There are a number of ways for the United States to move toward energy security and none is sufficient by itself.  Nuclear power is already a major contributor of CO2-free baseload generation now.  In order to achieve the large scale deployment of new nuclear plants required to meet projected energy demands, an “Energy New Deal” is needed to bridge the resource gap and allow us to build “Made in America” reactors.

The global economy of the future will depend largely on access to affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible energy.  Achieving this balance while meeting rising demand will require utilities and policymakers to deploy the proper mix of new generation sources, including renewable energy where feasible, and increased energy efficiency.   A collaborative, comprehensive approach is crucial to ensuring a secure, long-term, sustainable energy future.
